Svensky Monastery has become one of the largest sightseeings of Bryansk. Its documented mentions origin from XVI century, the legends say it's even older, founded by Bryansk knyaz' (duke) from 1288.

Roman Mikhailovich (Roman of Michael) started to lose his sight and sent for a miraculous icon from Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. But sailing on Desna, that icon suddenly appeared on the coast of Svene (until XVII century it was called Svine), where knyaz' had came, prayed in front of this icon and got cured that way. This exact spot was made a monastery, so the legends tell.

Of course, the existing complex is of younger age, XVII-XVIII centuries, the epoch of Baroque. And one can see a Ukrainian Baroque influence on the Holy Gates, as the territories of Left-bank Ukraine had been annexed by Russian Tsardom recently.
